Answer to Question 1

Osteoporosis is a serious illness that can be slowed by an adequate consumption of calcium and vitamin D and getting sufficient exercise. Note that in older adults, the skin's ability to make vitamin D from sunlight diminishes, and the intestines and kidneys lose some ability to absorb and convert vitamin D into its active form. An older woman who is lactose intolerant should consider taking a supplement containing calcium plus vitamin D.
