List the factors that negatively affect the BMR of a sedentary, 60-year-old African American woman who is 5 feet tall and overweight. What can this woman do to increase her BMR?

Being a woman, being short, being older, having a low lean body mass (due to being overweight), and rarely exercising all promote a lower basal metabolic rate. Additionally, African-Americans have BMRs that are about 10 percent lower than those of Caucasians. Beginning an exercise program that includes building more muscle mass can help her increase her BMR.
