Answer to Question 1

Americans today don't cook and eat more healthful meals at home often enough because we spend more time working and going to and from work; we eat more food, at more different kinds of places, and in larger portion sizes; and each day we consume more calories and are more sedentary, due to less-physical occupations, the presence of a variety of labor-saving devices, and reduced time spent in physical activities for fun.

Answer to Question 2

Type 1 Type 2
Cause Immune system destroys insulin-producing cells of the pancreas Insulin resistance in which body cells are unresponsive to insulin
Treatment Daily injections of insulin or an insulin pump Weight loss and/or medications
Prevalence 5 to 10 percent 90 to 95 percent
Age of Onset Usually childhood or young adult Usually older person, but increasingly seen in overweight youngsters
