Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
There is a difference in the amount of heat budget at different latitudes. This is from the angle the sun's
radiation is hitting Earth's surface. Polar latitudes have the sun approaching from low angles so the
radiation spreads over a greater area. Tropical latitudes have radiation coming from a nearly vertical
angle which lowers the distribution area. Information can be found in the section The Atmosphere
Moves in Response to Uneven Solar Heating and Earth's Rotation.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The exceedingly low pressure at the center of the storm generated an enormous storm surge. The
damage was compounded by the failure of some levees. Information can be found in the section The
Atlantic Hurricane Season of 2005 Was the Most Destructive Ever Recorded.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
