Newton's knew his equilibrium theory of tides was incomplete because the maximum theoretical range

Lunar tidal range had a maximum theoretical range of 55 centimeter. The solar tidal range had an even
smaller yield of a 24 centimeter range. These are both considerably smaller than the 2 meter tidal range
