Answer to Question 1

The solubility of adipic acid in water at 0 C is 0.3 g/100 mL. Therefore, even after cooling the solution in an ice-water bath, it will not be possible to recover 100 of the adipic acid.

Answer to Question 2

No, it is not an appropriate solvent for recrystallizing salicylic acid. First, the salicylic acid is too soluble in diethyl ether at room temperature. Second, in order to obtain a hot saturated solution, one would have to heat the mixture and, because the boiling point of diethyl ether is low (bp = 35 C), evaporation of the solvent would be a problem. Furthermore, diethyl ether is a flammable solvent and a well-known inhalation anesthetic and should not be used for recrystallizations.
