Staff in special care units are educated to care for people with moderate to severe cognitive impairment. They are trained in a variety of areas including communication techniques, behavior management techniques to address aggressive or agitated behavior, and appropriate methods for dealing with issues as varied as personal hygiene, incontinence, sexuality, and wandering. They are also taught skills for assisting client's with eating and mobility challenges.
