Answer to Question 1

There are many ways to modify one's home to adjust to changing competencies.
Minor structural changes include installing handrails and door knobs that are easier to grip. Major structural changes include lowering countertops, widening hallways and doorways, and adding wheelchair ramps. Even though the cost of home modifications may be less than a long-term care facility or assisted living, some individuals still cannot afford to make these changes. This results in a mismatch between their competencies and their environment.

Answer to Question 2

Competence is defined as a person's upper limit of ability to function in five domains: physical health, sensory-perceptual skills, motor skills, cognitive skills, and ego strength. Environmental press describes the physical, social, or interpersonal demands the environment makes on people.
