Focus of strategic management on a product group or category. Each retailer defines the categories and determines the products in the category. Each category becomes a strategic business unit within the retailer. Retailers and vendors must work together to become successful and profitable. The customer ultimately benefits as they have the right product in the stores in which they shop.
