Answer to Question 1

In a highly unusual move, the APA Board of Trustees decided to retain the categorical framework of 10 personality disorders in the main text of the DSM-5 and included an alternative model for personality disorder diagnosis in a separate section of the DSM-5 . This alternative model retails some of the categorical diagnoses in modified form, but also includes a dimensional classification system based on personality traits.

With the DSM-5 alternative personality model, a diagnosis of personality disorder can be made through two different routes:
1 . evidence that the client's pattern of personality traits matches characteristics from one of six specific personality disorder types; or
2 . evidence of at least moderate impairment in two key domains of personality functioning combined with certain specific pathological personality traits.
