Answer to Question 1

Research has shown that while concerns have been expressed regarding stimulant use in adolescents leading to drug abuse, the opposite is true. Stimulant medication actually reduces the likelihood of substance abuse.
For adolescents who do develop substance abuse issues, the most common drug is marijuana, although other substances can be abused.
Speculation about this link could include the role of impulsivity and risk-taking behavior as well as the tendency to associate with peers with similar attributes.
Another speculation is that substances help normalize the adolescent's emotions and behaviors and therefore addiction or abuse becomes more likely.
