(2) plan interventions: does this person have the intelligence level necessary to benefit from insight-oriented therapy? (3) evaluate treatment effectiveness: has this person's depression decreased over the course of therapy?

(1) meaningful or important: provides information and communication value; can provide evidence that leads to a theory of the cause of a disorder; (2) etiological validity: provides information on cause; (3) concurrent validity: agrees with information about behavior in other situations and from other sources; (4) predictive: provides information about the predictable course of the disorder, and later status and behavior.
