In a review of research on work stress and cardiovascular disease, Landsbergis and his colleagues concluded that the psychological stress of having a low degree of control known as low decision latitude was the most consistent predictor of CVD. They cited as support for their conclusion studies such as Haynes and Feinleib's Framingham Heart Study that found clerical workers to be twice as likely as white collar workers (e.g., managers) to have heart disease.
