Answer to Question 1

Research has suggested that female leaders in the workplace are as task oriented as
their male counterparts and have similar aspirations, abilities, values, and job-related
skills. The only difference is that men tend to be more controlling and thus are more
effective leaders in positions that require a directive style, whereas women tend to be
more democratic and thus are more effective as leaders in positions that require
cooperation and openness. In short, female leaders interact more with subordinates,
inviting them to participate in decision-making processes and to share information and
power. Research has also shown that female leaders are devalued relative to male
leaders when they adopt a masculine style of leadership or work in masculine
positions. But overall, both men and women have equal potential for effective
leadership in most situations.
