When bystanders are present, a victim is less likely to receive help. Bystanders impede
helping by reducing the likelihood that potential helpers will (1) notice that the victim
needs help, (2) interpret the situation as an emergency, (3) take responsibility for
helping, (4) decide to offer help, and finally (5) provide help. These factors together
make it less likely that a victim will be helped by someone in a crowd than by a single
individual.
