Answer to Question 1

Natural disasters profoundly affect the regions and nations that they strike. Many of the resources that
we depend on for our lives in modern society are located and made useful by geologists. These
resources include minerals and fuels. Many environmental problems are due to the affects of human
activities on Earth systems.

Answer to Question 2

States, nations, and empires have risen and fallen, and they have fought for control of, or sometimes
lost, natural resources. There are many examples available.
