Answer to Question 1

Many students are not aware of the multiple family forms that exist within America, most of
which are ethnically based, religion based, income based, or color based. The Muslim family
system is one such example. Note: The Muslims are people who have Islamic heritage; Islam
is the faith of the people. Not all Muslims are of the faith.
There are multiple origins of Muslims in America, from different nations. The American
Muslim (like other immigrant groups) is in the process of adapting and integrating American
culture, while still striving to maintain elements of their Islamic faith. This creates a unique
form of family system, which is not traditional Islam, or certainly not American modernist.
Characteristics of Muslim families in America are unequal status, in that women are
subordinate to her husband in authority and instrumental roles, but wives have a special status
that grants them special privileges. The husband has religious mandates to treat his wife with
respect and provide for her material needs throughout life.
In the Muslim family, all individuals are expected to subordinate themselves for the welfare of
the family unit, including the husband. Children are highly valued, and parents are obligated
to provide for all their needs. Children however, are also expected to be obedient, respectful
of parents and elders, and if necessary provide for their parents in old age. Family bonds and
commitment is very strong, and a lifelong obligation. Extramarital affairs and divorce is very
rare. The American Muslim family may feel estranged somewhat from the mainstream of
American culture, and often focuses inward upon itself.
