Answer to Question 1

Reaching the saturation point for disgraceful treatment and disregard, such as the roads that
divide, prisons that destroy, schools that ignore needs of ethnic minorities, rules that
denigrate certain groups of people, compelled these women to uncharacteristic action in
behalf of home and community, which in turn transformed them into powerful and skilled
activists. An example of taking a stand when you must is found in Rosa Parks' refusal to
give up her bus seat. This was a simple statement of human dignity and need that compelled
first a community, then a whole nation to organize and seek justice. Other events besides
the case studies in this ethnographic study may be considered as evidence of life-changing
transformations that progress in tandem with personal activism. Students will conclude that
the more people are transformed from passive to active, the more likely the movement is to
succeed. Even humble people have more skills than they realize, and influence others in
their social networks. Likewise, the more the movement captures the heart and mind of
the people most affected, the more they are transformed into knowledgeable actors for the
cause... and branch out to embrace other causes.
