What are the four goals cited in your text that can be achieved by performing prosocial actions? Describe each goal and give an example of how each goal might lead one person to help another.

Answer to Question 1

Answer: Goals: improving our basic welfare; gaining social status and approval; managing self-image; managing emotions and moods.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The hypothesis is that when one person empathizes with the plight of another person, he/she will want to help that other for purely altruistic reasons (no expected benefit for oneself). Perspective taking paves the way to the emotional response of empathic concern, and this can lead to altruistic motivation and self-helping.
