Answer:
We can start an upward spiral by having positive emotions which will in turn allow us to cope with the unavoidable difficulties in life more effectively. The most difficult part of this is to generate those first positive emotions.
Building close personal relationships is also crucial to happiness. These can take some work, but the strong social support network that results can certainly be a great benefit as we experience challenges.
We can attempt to gain the personal skills that contribute to happiness. This might include working on being more agreeable or extroverted.
Finally, we can stop doing things that are counterproductive to happiness. For example, not abusing drugs, not trying for perfection, and setting only realistic attainable goals can set us on the right track to experiencing more happiness.

Factors contributing to societal weight gain:
1) Marketing of fast foods have put more emphasis on large portions.
2) People don't walk as much for a variety of reasons having to do with the way cities are laid out.
3) School buses stop closer to student homes than they did historically.
4) Marketing of higher-calorie foods, such as snacks.
5) People are more likely to eat away from home, and at different times, leading to less chance for a sit-down dinner, perhaps with family.
