What is self-evaluation maintenance theory and when does it say we are likely to feel better about the success of others?

Answer: Self-evaluation maintenance theory states that one important goal of social interaction is to maintain a positive evaluation of oneself. We are likely to feel better if the success of a person similar to us is in a domain that we do not consider ourselves proficient in.
