Natural selection is the process by which characteristics that help animals survive and reproduce are passed on to their offspring. An adaptation is a characteristic that is well designed for survival and reproduction in a particular environment. Natural selection may be considered the driving force behind evolution (what makes evolution happen), and adaptations are the products of natural selection: they are essentially our evolutionary legacy.
