their skin is extra sensitive to chemicals in the environment, and because of this are often the first ones to go when there is an environmental problem

There respiratory system is more exposed than ours is. For example, the air they inhale goes directly into their lungs and into their bloodstream without much filtration. They are also much smaller than use, so any chemical will quickly circulate in their bloodstream.
