Answer to Question 1

Cohabitation is defined as living together in a sexual relationship without being
married. Reasons for cohabitating may vary and could include the following: it's a
stage toward marriage; it reflects a desire to live together without planning to get
married; it's a substitute for marriage. Research reflects that cohabitants tend to be
less happy, less healthy, and less satisfied than married couples. Some research
showed that abuse was more common among cohabitants than among those who
were dating or married.

Answer to Question 2

Situational couple violence refers to a form of abuse in which one or both partners
engage in outbursts of verbal and physical attack. Intimate terrorism refers to a very
controlling form of abuse in which one partner, usually the man, uses violent methods
of accelerating intensity to isolate, degrade, and punish the partner. Students'
answers may vary, but they should provide support for their argument. The high level
of control in intimate terrorism probably makes that type less likely to lead to divorce.
