Answer to Question 1

Factors that contribute to low motivation include lack of meaningful challenge in the
curriculum, school size, and lack of extensive extracurricular activities. Possible
remedies include designing a curriculum that is intellectually challenging and that
requires social interaction, designing high schools for 200400 students, and offering
many extracurricular activities to engage students in the school.

Answer to Question 2

Recommendations will vary and should include the school schedule since current
middle school periods of 40 minutes do not allow for in-depth discussion; fewer
classes with different teachers each day since having many different teachers
prevents more personal student-teacher involvement; and school bonding
organizing the school into smaller groups so that teachers work with a limited
number of students, thus increasing student involvement and engagement in school.
