Answer to Question 1

The critical period is the only time that one may learn a particular aspect of
language. Once that period has come and gone, no amount of training or exposure
to the environment will modify the developing person so that they might advance.
The sensitive period is not as rigid and suggests that there are best or optimum
times to learn the language component, but if that period passes, it will still be
possible to learn the component later via training or new experiences.

Answer to Question 2

Theory of mind is a person's theory of what other people might be thinking. In order
to have a theory of mind, children must realize that other people are not necessarily
thinking the same thoughts that they themselves are. That realization is seldom
possible before age 4. Theory of mind also includes the realization that thoughts
may not reflect reality. The development of theory of mind is partly dependent on
age-related maturation of the prefrontal cortex.
