Answer to Question 1

This answer should reflect an understanding of social referencing. The child will
probably look to the caregiver for a response and will reflect that response. If the
music is extremely loud, however, the child may be disturbed by it regardless of the
caregiver's response.

Answer to Question 2

Diana should approach cautiously and watch for the child's response. She should
stay calm and at a distance. The child's response will depend not only on Diana, but
on the child's temperament, the security of the mother-child relationship, how the
mother responds (social referencing), how near the mother is, and the child's mood
at the time.
