Answer to Question 1

Percentile ranks allow comparisons of growth between children and comparison of
children to themselves to chart their growth. Percentiles can be used to alert parents
and professionals if a child is not growing as he or she should. They can be used to
explain differences in development among children, for example, a child who is at
the 90th percentile in height and weight is developing normally, as is the child who is
at the 40th percentile in both height and weight.

Answer to Question 2

Responses might include how infants are alert to experiences that stimulate the
brain in ways needed for their development and should include that the brain
protects itself through processes such as self-righting and plasticity. It should be
acknowledged that if lack of stimulation, neglect, or maltreatment is sustained and
severe, the brain may not be able to successfully recover from early adversity.
