Answer to Question 1

The notion is that the hemispheres of the brain are involved in different kinds of intellectual and emotional activities. Research suggests that the left hemisphere is more involved in intellectual undertakings that require logical analysis, problem solving, language, and computation skills. The right hemisphere is usually superior in visual-spatial functions, aesthetic and emotional responses, and understanding metaphors. But it is not true that children are either right brained or left brained.. The functions of both hemispheres overlap and communication is through the corpus callosum, a bundle of nerve fibers that connect the two hemispheres.

Answer to Question 2

As the brain develops, visual information processing and reading ability improves. The parts of the brain that enable the child to sustain attention and screen out distractions becomes increasingly myelinated between the ages of 4 and 7 . This enables most children to focus on schoolwork. The speed of visual information processing improves throughout childhood. By adolescence, the brain functions at adult levels.
