Answer to Question 2

There are three stages of attachment development, according to Ainsworth and colleagues (1978). The first stage, known as the initial-preattachment phase, lasts from birth to about 3 months and is characterized by indiscriminate attachment. This means that infants will want to maintain contact with a caregiver, but no specific one is required. The second stage, known as the attachment-in-the-making phase, occurs at about 3 or 4 months and is characterized by preference for familiar figures. Now the infant prefers to be with one or more regular caregivers. The third, or clear-cut-attachment phase, occurs at about 6 or 7 months and is characterized by intensified dependence on the primary caregiver, usually the mother. During this stage, the infant will generally show a significant amount of distress when separated from the primary caregiver.
