Answer to Question 1

Substance abuse involves continued use of a drug or substance, despite the fact that the use is causing harm to the individual. Someone who is abusing a drug may, or may not, develop substance dependence. Dependence often involves tolerance and withdrawal. Tolerance means that more and more of the substance is needed to achieve the desired effects. Withdrawal is typified by abstinence syndrome, in which a sudden drop in usage triggers symptoms such as tremors, weakness, rapid pulse, restlessness, and/or a significant increase in blood pressure.
