Obesity is defined as a weight in excess of 20 percent of the norm. The norms, of course, are based upon both age and gender. As much as 15 percent of American youth are considered obese. Contributing factors include an increase in television viewing (and the number of commercials advertising high fat and high sugar foods that children watch) and a decline in the number of families engaging in physical activity as a part of their family interactions.
