According to Piaget, children between the ages of 2 and 4 show confusion between symbols and the things they represent. Egocentrism contributes to the assumption that their thoughts are exact reflections of external reality. They do not recognize that words are arbitrary and that people can use different words to refer to things. For instance, a child would say that you can't call a table a cup because you can't drink out of a cup. Another example of this confusion of real and mental events is that children of four, for instance, believe that dreams are real.
