What changes in the academic environment do students experience in the transition from elementary school to middle or junior high?

In the transition to middle or junior high, students must adapt to a new physical environment, new teachers, and new peers. Students move from class to class during the day, each with a different set of students. Size of the student body often increases dramatically.
