Initially, researchers believed that traditional social connections would be disrupted by online communication. Preliminary research provided some support to this thesis. However, after the advent of ubiquitous new communication technologies, such as instant messaging and social networking, researchers now report findings of greater social connectedness and well-being amongst users. One possible exception to this is if the online interactions are carried on with strangers versus with friends and family.
