Adult feedback plays a pivotal role in subsequent tasks attempted by the child. If the adult's feedback is negative and critical, the child is more susceptible to display shame when confronted with a difficult future task. If the feedback is positive and encouraging, children are more apt to persist in the face of a difficult future task.
