If a projectile is throw, can air friction stop the projectile from moving in the x direction to eventually just free falling with no motion in the x direction. ?

no

aerodynamic drag depends on velocity, so there is little drag at low speed so it will never quite stop moving

in real life the horizontal velocity will fall below the point where the wind or random turbulence has more effect
