Answer to Question 1

I would coach him to behave in the ways soon-to-be accepted children behave. Their behavioral profile in dealing with a new peer group involves hanging back and watching peers interact to learn and understand what is going on. Once I thought he understood what his peers were doing, I would teach him to comment constructively on the peer play in ways that would invite continued interaction.

I would also coach him so as to minimize behavioral patters associated with peer rejection or neglect. I would try to teach him to recognize when he was disrupting or criticizing play, and focus on teaching him to move beyond hovering on the edge of the group for too long.
