Answer to Question 1

In the first few months of life, babies are very dependent on caregivers to help them regulate emotions. Toward the middle of the first year, they begin to find ways to self-regulate by turning away from unpleasant stimuli or sucking on a pacifier or thumb to calm themselves. Toward the end of the first year, they begin to be able to actively move away from upsetting situations or persons, rock themselves, or chew on objects. As they become toddlers, self-regulation efforts are often more outwardly directed at controlling the behavior of others (e.g., asking someone to pick them up) or the object that is upsetting them. They might even be able to distract themselves from disappointment by playing with toys. Toddlers generally cannot, though, regulate experience of fear. By preschool age, children are able to talk about their emotions as a way of regulating them, which is especially helpful when a parent helps them process through negative emotional experiences.
