Answer to Question 1

(a) Participant children tend to show immediate IQ gains in contrast to nonparticipants and may continue to show gains for three to four years after the program has ended. However, such differences are no longer evident by junior high school. (b) Participants are more likely to meet basic school requirements, are less likely to be assigned to special education classes, and more likely to finish high school. (c) Participants' academic pride and general attitudes toward achievement improve. This effect extends to participant mothers as well, who show increased satisfaction with their children's school performance and higher aspirations for their children. The addition of home-based intervention and parental involvement tends to enhance all of the above effects and make long-term benefits more stable.
