Answer to Question 1

Psychomotor speed declines as we move from mid to later life. Older adults take longer to decide that they need to respond. The difference in reaction time between older adults and middle-aged adults increases as the uncertainty level increases. The amount of decline can be reduced if older adults are allowed to practice making quick responses or if they are experienced in the task. Exercise can also mediate the effects of normative aging on cognitive slowing. Research documenting age-related changes in attention, psychomotor speed, vision, and hearing brings up concerns about whether older adults should be allowed to drive. Performance measures such as the useful field of view (UFOV) can measure an individual's ability to extract visual information in a single glance without turning one's head or moving one's eyes.
