Answer to Question 1

Some possible negative effects of television viewing include (1) increased aggression after watching violence, (2) increase in gender stereotypes, and (3) less creativity after watching action-oriented shows. On the positive side, television viewing can increase prosocial behavior and academic skills. Children who watch shows that emphasize prosocial behavior are more likely to behave prosocially with an increase in generosity, cooperation, and self-control. The power of TV can be harnessed to help children learn important academic skills. The time preschool children spend watching Sesame Street predicts their grades in high school and the amount of time they spend reading as adolescents.
