The student should assert that a civil annulment is granted by a state civil court that declares that the marriage was not valid, returns property to the respective partners, and allows both to remarry. These can occur even when children are involved. These annulments are mostly for fraud (misrepresentation before marriage or bigamy), but they can be granted also on the bases of a partner's underage status, sexual incompatibility, and insanity.
