Answer to Question 1

The student should assert that the two types of marital separation are formal and informal separation. In an informal separation, spouses settle financial and child custody issues informally between them. They are still legally married and have marital obligations to one another. In formal separation, a couple uses a lawyer to draw up a legal agreement outlining living arrangements, child custody, and financial issues.
