Abstinence only programs teach abstinence from sex as the only way to avoid STIs and teenage pregnancy.
Comprehensive sexual education programs include information on the use of condoms and other contraceptives as a way of preventing STIs and pregnancy, include more information about STIs and sexual health skills (such as refusing unwanted sex and avoiding risky sexual behaviors).
Comprehensive programs are more effective at delaying sexual intercourse, reducing the number of sexual partners, preventing teen pregnancy, and preventing STIs.
