Teen pregnancy is higher because these groups are more often living in poverty.
Poverty increases exposure to crime in the neighborhood, lack of parental involvement with the child, conflict in the family, and early initiation of sexual activity, all of which are risk factors for a teenage girl getting pregnant or a teenage male getting a girl pregnant.
Life circumstances like these make teen pregnancy seem less of a disruption of the teens future than is the case for more advantaged teens.
