Psychological distress, declines in school performance, and risky sexual behavior such as having multiple partners, occur more often than among predominantly heterosexual samples.
Sexual minority youth are also more likely to commit suicide and are more often verbally and physically harassed by peers.
Mitigating factors are family acceptance and achievement of a positive gay, lesbian, or bisexual identity.
A diverse high school and one that has support groups for sexual minority teens are also mitigating factors.
