Early maturing girls bodies attract the attention of older males.
Older males expose girls to risk factors such as having early sex, drinking alcohol, smoking or taking drugs.
Girls may be less able to monitor and inhibit risky decision making and behavior at the age when puberty occurs, and thus engage in more risky behavior.
Because they become heavier in the legs and hips at a time when most of their peers are thinner, and because the ideal body type for many American women is slim and tall, early maturing girls may have a negative body image.
This may lead to eating disordered behavior.
