Take a look at lines three and four. I know Bob Hope did a number of USO preformances in every major US war from WWII through the First Gulf War. So I have to assume the "they" in those lines refers to the USO. The USO would have put on various shows for the troops, bring in popular acts and, of course, popular and beautiful women.
