Answer to Question 1

The student should assert that anti-miscegenation laws forbid white and non-white marriages. Black-white marriages were banned in the late 1600s, when Virginia tobacco planters felt they needed to shore up the institution of slavery, which depended upon clear distinctions between black and white offspring. During the 18th century, all southern states and any northern states outlawed all black-white marriages, and many targeted white-Asian unions. After the Supreme Court case of Loving v. Virginia (1967), interracial marriages were struck down. Disapproval of interracial marriages has declined. One out of 15 marriages in the U.S. today is biracial.
